Happy Easter from all of us at Lucky Lucy’s Planted Purpose!
While we love seeing a fluffy tail hopping through the yard, we know the heartbreak of waking up to find your prize-winning lettuce has been turned into a midnight snack. This Easter, we’re sharing our favorite kid-safe and family-friendly ways to keep the local wildlife from treating your garden like an all-you-can-eat buffet.
- The "Magic Potion" (Garlic & Mint Spray) Kids love a science project! You can make a non-toxic repellent spray that smells great to us but "eww" to rabbits.
The Recipe: Blend two bulbs of garlic with a handful of fresh mint and some water. Strain it into a spray bottle.
The Activity: Have the kids help "shield" the plants by spraying the leaves. It won't hurt the plants or the bunnies, but the smell is enough to make any rabbit hop the other way.
- Flower Power 🌸 Nature has its own velvet rope! Some of the prettiest flowers are actually the best security guards.
Marigolds & Lavender: Rabbits generally dislike the strong scents of these beauties.
The Plan: Plant a "border" of marigolds around your veggies. It’s a fun way for the kids to learn about companion planting while adding a pop of color to the garden.
- The "Disco" Garden 💿 Wildlife is easily spooked by sudden flashes of light. If you have any old CDs lying around (remember those?), they make for great garden decor and deterrents.
The Activity: Tie the CDs to some twine and hang them from stakes or low branches near your fruit.
Why it works: As they spin in the wind, they create flashes that keep birds and bunnies guessing. Plus, it looks like a garden party!
- Create a "Sacrifice Zone" 🥕 If you can’t beat ‘em, feed ‘em—just not your prime crops.
The Strategy: Designate a small corner of the yard far away from your main patch. Plant some cheap clover or extra dandelion greens there.
The Lesson: It's a great way to teach kids about sharing the ecosystem while keeping your main harvest safe for the dinner table.
A Note on "Scope Creep" 📈 In the spirit of our podcast, Vibe & Scope Creep, remember: don’t try to do all of these at once! Start with one "defense system" this weekend and see how the garden vibes. Gardening is a marathon, not a sprint—unless you’re a rabbit, then it’s definitely a sprint.
Wishing you all a day full of growth, greenery, and just the right amount of chocolate!
Stay rooted,
